ATCO Gas and Pipelines Ltd. Existing Distribution Pipeline Compliance Application
Project Background
On 27 February 2026, ATCO Gas and Pipelines Ltd. (ATCO Gas) filed an application for the Existing Distribution Pipeline Compliance project. This application seeks approval to continue operating and maintaining 11 existing low-pressure gas pipelines located in the City of Lloydminster along the Alberta-Saskatchewan border.
This project does not involve building new pipelines and does not require new rights-of-way. All pipelines included in the application are already in place and currently in service.
Where the Pipelines are Located
The 11 pipelines are situated within existing road rights-of-way along:
- 50 Avenue
- Meridian Avenue
- Highway 17 – These pipelines run between 67 Street and 12 Street (Township 494 Road).
About the Pipelines
The pipelines are a total length of 0.563 kilometers long and vary in:
- Diameter: 60 mm to 219 mm (two to eight inches)
- Materials: steel or plastic
- Installation Dates: From the early years of gas service in Lloydminster in the 1930s through to 2017.
Purpose of the Application
ATCO Gas’s Application includes:
- A section 214 request to bring the existing pipelines into compliance with Canada Energy Regulator requirements.
- Requests for additional exemptions under the Canadian Energy Regulator Act.
