The Canadian Energy Regulator Act will come into force on August 28, 2019. The National Energy Board (NEB) will then become the Canada Energy Regulator (CER).

The mandate of the NEB to provide energy information will continue under the CER. We will build on our 60 years of experience providing Canadians with neutral, independent, fact-based energy information, including analysis and statistics.

Looking back to 1959 when the NEB was established, energy information was already being provided to Canadians in the form of statistics, in collaboration with the Dominion Bureau of Statistics (what is now Statistics Canada). In its second year of existence, the NEB conducted special studies on several energy matters relating to energy forecasts, in cooperation with other government departments and agencies.

Description:

The CER will build on this practice of providing quality energy information to Canadians while also developing new approaches to enhance energy information in Canada, such as interactive data visualizations. This includes collaboration among federal, provincial and territorial departments and agencies, including the creation of the virtual Canadian Centre for Energy Information (CCEI). The CCEI aims to compile energy data from multiple sources into a single, easy-to-use website and supports ongoing work to improve the overall quality of energy information available to Canadians. More information on this initiative is available from Natural Resources Canada.
